Teeth Grinding Causes
Teeth grinding is considered as a sleep disorder. Although this condition can occur in daytime, still most have this have it at nighttime. This condtion can be a combination of teeth grinding, clenching or gnashing. It is safe to say that all of us will be experiencing this condition at some point in our lives. It is being compared to snoring since they have they same annoying and irritating effects.
It is believed that only 5% of people who have nocturnal teeth grinding will develop symptoms. They are usually not aware of this condition. So the most effective way of figuring out if you are suffering from this condition is to ask a loved one, family member or a friend who has accompanied or observed you in sleep.Just like snorning, teeth grinding is very noticeable and of course audible.
Now you may observe your body and check at these symptoms that are usually associated with teeth grinding. Usually sufferers will experience morning jaw soreness and muscle tension throughout the day. This pain will often lead to the development of eating disorders. Since pain is difficult to ignore, the sufferer will have erratic eating habits. If you are having earaches then it’s a possible that you teeth grind. Just have yourself checked by an ear specialist first. If there are no infections then you better consider teeth grinding. Sufferers usually have stiffness and neck pain. The extreme clenching can cause headaches, migraines and temporomandibular joint pain (TMJ).The most evident symptoms of teeth grinding are loosening and fracturing of one’s teeth.It can even flatten one’s teeth. In some extreme cases, partial dentures, bridges, complete dentures, root canals and even implants may be required.

It is believed that stress is the major cause of teeth grinding. We are just plagued with so much anxiety that we tend to develop various strains of stress. Since we deal with stress on a daily basis, our bodies’ only way to destress or to show signs of stress and fatigue is by teeth grinding. Another obvious cause of this condition is malocclusion. This has something to do with the person’s overbite and underbite. This can be easily checked by your dentist. X-rays can definitely pinpoint the problem areas in one’s teeth or jaws.
These are other factors that can cause teeth grinding: smoking, high levels of blood alcohol, high consumption of coffee, chocolate or other caffeinated drinks,sleep disorders like sleep apnea and snoring, erratic work schedules, medication such as stimulants, Parkinson’s and Huntington’s diseases. For these latter reasons, you should always consult your doctor for further advice.
