Botox – Stop Teeth Grinding and Clenching Immediately

Bruxism is the medical term for grinding or clenching your teeth. While it is usually called bruxism or grinding when this excess muscle activity occurs at night, it is called clenching when it occurs during the daytime. The exact cause of this overactive masseter muscle action is not precisely known but it is usually attributed to stress or tension for lack of a better understanding of the root cause.

In severe and continuous cases, secondary medical problems will occur. Most commonly, muscle fatigue, pain and headaches are common. Ultimately, tooth damage may occur from the wear on the occlusal surfaces. Traditional therapies include night time splints to protect the teeth and medications that attempt to decrease inflammation in the muscle or cause it to relax through a sedative approach. Other well known therapies include biofeedback, thermal applications, and even acupuncture. The fact that there are many different approaches is a testament that there is not one universal treatment that consistently works.

The target of any masseter hyperactivity treatment is to break the muscle spasm and weaken its clenching effect. In this regard, Botox would seem to be a very targeted approach to that goal…in the shortest period of time. Provided that the muscle area at fault can be precisely identified by feel, it can be quickly and precisely injected. The goal is to break the spastic part of the muscle, not prevent the majority of the muscle from moving. Once the focal part of the muscle is weakened, excessive contraction is stopped and the pain should decrease as the clenching subsides.

The key to a good outcome witrh Botox injections for teeth clenching is precise identification of the area of the masseter muscle which is most hyperactive. Most of the time, patients can put their finger right on it…or can show you the muscle bulge when they clench or bite together. This muscle ‘ball’ can then be directly injected through the skin. Usually there are three or four areas on the masseter over tha jaw angle that can be injected. But intraoral injections into the lateral pterygoid or coronoid attachment of the temporalis can be injected as well if necessary. By doing spot injections, there is never a risk, in my experience, of causing too much muscle weakness and affecting one’s ability to chew. The only area to avoid is the part of the masseter that has the parotid gland between it and the skin. (in front of and slightly below the ear lobe) But that can be easily avoided by putting the needle the whole way down to the bone, withdrawing a little bit, and then injecting.

The dose of Botox to use should be around 25 to 35 units per each masster muscle as the starting dose. While it may ultimately require a higher dose than that to get an optimal response, this is a good starting dose for safety and economic reasons (insurance will not pay for these injections) If no relief is obtained at this starting dose, then this indicates that Botox is not likely to work and higher dosing may be a wasted effort and expense.

Like cosmetic Botox injections, the benefits are not seen immediately. Botox does not kick in for about a week after injection. For this reason, I like to mix Marcaine (a 24 hour lasting local anesthetic) and Kenalog (10mg/ml), with the Botox to get a more prompt pain-reliefing effect and help reduce muscle inflammation. One should expect Botox to last about 4 months or so. When the discomfort starts to return, you will know it is time for another injection session.

Snoring and Grinding Your Teeth May Be Symptoms of Obstructive …

That embarrassing snoring habit your spouse complains about during family gatherings may have something in common with the worn down teeth the dentist is always harassing you about at checkups. Both of these seemingly harmless habits may be symptoms of a serious health problem, Obstructive Sleep Apnea (OSA).

Research presented at the 2009 American College of Chest Physicians (ACCP) showed that 1 in 4 patients suffering from OSA also suffered from nocturnal bruxism, commonly known as nighttime teeth grinding. It is estimated that approximately 10% of the US population suffers from bruxism which can lead to migraines, tension-type headaches, TMJ pain, and cracked or worn teeth.

More than 30 million Americans suffer from OSA. The comorbidities associated with the disease are very serious, including increased risk of stroke and heart attack, GERD, and erectile dysfunction. During apneic episodes, sufferers cease breathing for 10 seconds or more and this happens repeatedly during the sleep cycle.

According to Dr. Shyam Subramanian, MD, "The relationship between Obstructive Sleep Apnea and sleep bruxism is usually related to an arousal response. The ending of an epneic event may be accompanied by a number of mouth phenomena, such as snoring, gasps, mumbles, and teeth grinding… High levels of anxiety can lead to bruxism and untreated sleep apnea is known to cause mood disturbances including depression."

Bruxism during sleep may be treated with dental splints such as the NTI-tss Plus which is worn over the four front teeth and has been approved by the FDA for the prevention of migraine and tension-type headaches.

OSA may be treated with Continuous Positive Airway Pressure (CPAP) or dental appliances such as the TAP or EMA, both FDA approved for the treatment of Obstructive Sleep Apnea. If you are snoring or grinding your teeth, make an appointment with your health care provider. These seemingly harmless nuisances may have grave consequences if left untreated.

Bruxism is a sleep disorder that causes sufferers to grind their teeth while asleep. It affects over 20 million people and if left untreated can wear down your teeth and cause headaches, and ear ache. Bruxism can also lead to jaw pain and if you have any existing dental health problems it could make them much worse.

Over the long term bruxism can eventually wear away the enamel on your teeth causing sensitivity to hot and cold foods. Eating ice cream or drinking hot tea could become very painful.

What causes bruxism? It seems that many people who suffer from sleep apnea also suffer from bruxism. Sleep apnea is when someone stops breathing for a very short time during sleep and is associated with loud snoring.

Bruxism can be caused by stress, making your jaw muscles stiff and tense. You could try relaxation exercises to ease your tension and try and resolve the issues that are making you stressed. Regular daily exercise can help to ease stress as it releases endorphins which are natural painkillers that also produce feelings of happiness and wellbeing.

Smoking and drinking to much alcohol or caffeine can also aggravate the condition as they are all stimulants. Try cutting back on coffee especially a few hours before you go to bed. You could try drinking decaffeinated coffee instead. Bruxism can be a side effect of prescription drugs such as anti depressants.

Dental malocclusion is when the teeth are not properly aligned and don’t fit together. This condition may result in bruxism with a subconscious reaction to the abnormality by grinding the teeth into correct alignment. Regular check ups at your dentist should reveal any underlying dental problems and prompt treatment will save a lot of problems in the future.

If your dentist suspects that you suffer from bruxism he will probably recommend a mouth guard for you to wear at night preventing you from grinding your teeth in your sleep.

There is only one cure for teeth grinding. Forget about mouth guards because they don’t work. All they do is sit in between your jaws so your teeth don’t rub against each other.
There is only one cure for teeth grinding. Forget about mouth guards because they don’t work. All they do is sit in between your jaws so your teeth don’t rub against each other. While that happens, you are still grinding on your mouth guard at night which will eventually be worn-off to the point where you’ll have to buy another one. This could go on for years! Mouth guards can be expensive, uncomfortable, and just a waste of your time.

So, do you want to know the best treatment? It’s by performing exercises daily. Jaw exercises have a much more positive effect on helping stop your teeth grinding problem than any other treatment available. When I had problems with my teeth, I performed exercises for about 2 months and I started to see improvements. I wondered at one point if I was ever going to stop, and thankfully I found this one book. It’s called The Cure For Bruxism. It’s a book that teaches you the best exercises to perform in order to quit your teeth-grinding habit. I purchased it and in 3 days I already noticed a difference. About 8 days later I was fully cured. Imagine how long it would have taken me if I continued doing my own exercises! I mean, I was glad that they were working because I was seeing improvements but I had no idea about the exercises listed in The Cure For Bruxism book.

This program has been around for a while and it’s been proven to work. It was displayed in The New York Times and other newspapers for being so effective. If you are not sure about what the best cure for teeth grinding is, then stop wondering. It’s right in front of you. It could save you time, money, and your smile.

Bruxism Treatment Options

Finding an effective Bruxism treatment is the first step in putting a stop to painful, potentially damaging nighttime teeth grinding. It is most common for teeth grinding to occur while sleeping, and if continues for long periods could very well develop into temporo mandibular joint syndrome with long-term damage to the sufferers teeth and jaw. Controlling Bruxism can be a challenge as the problem can be the result of any of several underlying causes from stress, to too much caffeine, sometimes even mineral deficiencies are fingered as potential culprits.

Doctors approach Bruxism treatment in several different ways. Many times, they will recommend a mouth guard at the beginning of treatment. By using a mouth guard, Bruxism sufferers can immediately minimize the damage done to their teeth by protecting them against the strenuous grinding.

Once the teeth are protected, patients can begin to control their symptoms. Because Bruxism can have so many different causes, each case is slightly different. Aspirin is frequently prescribed at the outset to eliminate the pain and help sufferers sleep through the night. If the aspirin is not effective, doctors will sometimes step up to stronger medicines like muscle relaxers or steroids. If pain continues, injections of anesthetics may be used. In severe cases, doctors may recommend surgery to modify or reconstruct the damaged joint.

Controlling the pain associated with teeth grinding can go a long way to helping remove some of the stress that many people associate with their condition. Unfortunately, muscle relaxers, steroids, and anesthetics present their own risks and are a best a short term answer to the problem. The only way to truly end the pain of Bruxism and prevent long-term damage to the teeth and jaw is finding a way to stop clenching your jaw and grinding your teeth.

Most conventional teeth grinding treatments are temporary solutions at best.

Massage therapy and relaxation techniques have proven successful in helping reduce or eliminate nighttime teeth grinding. A qualified massage therapist can identify and treat areas where your muscles are especially tense, and can help you learn to minimize that stress yourself. In addition, therapists often recommend drinking warm soothing drinks before bed and applying a warm compress or heating pad to the jaw area to help reduce grinding. Many also advise patients to eliminate the use of tobacco and alcohol before going to bed.

One common massage technique is to focus on the muscles just above the ears. Applying firm steady pressure massage the area in a circular motion over about a three-inch area. If the area is especially tender, you may want to just press on it for 20 seconds or so. Continue massaging for 2-3 minutes moving around to cover the entire area. You should begin to feel some relief almost immediately as the muscles start to relax.

Simple physical exercises and self-massage is often the best Bruxism treatment. There is a wonderful program available online that provides complete support for people who grind their teeth. The exercises are easy to do and you can incorporate them into to your nighttime routine to start getting the best night’s sleep you’ve had in months while waking pain free in the morning. You should click here now to get all the details on this program and begin your Bruxism treatment tonight.

How to Clean A Dog’s Teeth – Made Easy

Many Dog owners suddenly come to the realisation that their Dog has bad breath. We often assume that this is normal for Dogs and that all Dogs eventually get bad breath.

This is not the case. Your Dog does not need to have bad breath. The reason for your Dogs bad breath is normally because they have dirty teeth. The plaque and decay that can easily begin is the reason why your Dog has bad breath.

It is easy for us to overlook the very important part of looking after Dogs, and that is cleaning their teeth. Dogs teeth need to be cared for much like our own. You need to ensure they you have a way to regularly clean their teeth. Without proper Dental care your Dogs health will suffer much as your own would. On top of this is the very real risk of an expensive Dental bill. Left unchecked you will almost certainly be facing teeth extraction at some point in your Dogs life.

Cleaning Dogs teeth is not a difficult process. In fact it is very straightforward. Either buy a toothpaste suited to Dogs or give them a raw bone a few times a week. The gnawing on raw bones will quickly clean your Dogs teeth. The grinding and gnawing is great to strip away Tartar and plaque.

Try either brushing your Dogs teeth or giving them a bone as soon as you can. You owe it to your Dog and yourself.

If you have any concerns about Raw Bones for Dogs, ensure you talk to your Vet first.

Teeth Grinding in Children, Bruxism – What Can You Do?

Teeth grinding in children is otherwise known as bruxism and happens when children clench their upper and lower teeth, rubbing them together. Commonly children grind their teeth whilst sleeping and are not aware of what they are doing.

What are the causes of bruxism in children?

It is not known for certain why some children start grinding their teeth and some children don’t. There are many theories to suggest that it could be down to the fact that the sets of top and bottom teeth do not fit together comfortably due to the fact that children’s teeth and jaws grow in phases leading to unpleasant sensations in the area. The natural response of the child is to grind their teeth to soothe themselves which often later develops into a habit. It has also been shown that both children and adults grind their teeth when they feel anxious in some way, or even as a response to facial pain such as an earache or teething. It has also been shown that hyperactive children have developed bruxism.

More recent research has suggested that sleep disturbances may be a cause for bruxism in children as well as causing a number of other problems such as bed-wetting, drooling and sleep-talking. Interruptions in the rapid eye movement (REM) patterns due to dehydration during sleep can be the underlying cause of many of these problems, though your dentist will be able to advise you more on this matter.

What are the effects?

Children do not usually experience ill effects from grinding their teeth. Even when their milk teeth show wear it usually does not cause any pain or damage, yet if this wear gets severe, or if your child has already lost their milk teeth, then it is advisable to seek treatment from your dentist as dental problems such as tooth infections can occur. In most cases of teeth grinding in children they will usually outgrow the problem.

What can be done to help?

Whilst the problems will most likely go away you may want to try some methods to help the child stop grinding their teeth in the meantime. Your dentist would be the best source of advice, and will be able to make sure that there are no problems regarding the alignment of the child’s teeth.

The most common remedy recommendation is usually a mouth guard. Wearing a mouth guard at night will prevent the child from grinding their teeth and night, and has a very high success rate in reducing the habit. However, your child may feel uncomfortable wearing a mouth guard and for this reason it is wise to look into other treatment options. In many cases hypnosis has been shown a successful way to get people of all ages out of the habit of grinding teeth.

In children whose grinding appears to be down to stress or anxiety it is extremely important to discover the underlying cause for these feelings. Try ways to relax your child before they go to sleep, such as a warm bath and a massage of the jaw. These methods will help to ensure that your child has a deep, relaxing and uninterrupted sleep.

The most important thing is that you needn’t be alarmed by a child’s grinding as it is extremely common. If your child already has their adult teeth then it is more of a worry, though there are many options available so seek advice from your dentist.

Wearing Night Guards For Teeth Grinding

Night guards are effective in controlling the damage that is done by bruxism, or the grinding and clenching of the teeth. As the name suggests, they are like bite pads which are worn at night to protect the upper from teeth grinding against the lower ones.

Bruxism is bad for a number of reasons. Not only can the sound be unpleasant for people sleeping in the same room as the person who grinds his teeth, but it also can wear teeth down, and damage the TMJ, or temporal mandibular joints.

Made From Plastic

Typically, night guards are made from plastic materials, put together either in a laboratory or in a dentist’s office. This can be done by taking impressions of the teeth and then having them manufactured, or they can be made directly in the mouth by the dentist.

If an impression is made, then afterwards the night guard is fabricated in a laboratory. Pre-formed night guards would also be fitted by the dentist in the office without the need of lab work, which reduces the cost. The key to getting a good one is that it needs to fit perfectly, as one that is not perfectly snug will not do you any help at all.

Importance of Night Guards

Bruxism may seem like nothing more than an irritation, but controlling bruxism by using a night guard is more important than you might think. Not only can your teeth chip and break due to excessive tooth grinding, but you can also have headaches and jaw pain. Severe bruxism can even require surgery to correct the problem.

If you suffer from bruxism, it’s important to see your dentist and form a plan of action. Custom-made night guards, fitted by your dentist, are usually the best option, although not the least expensive one.

Have you ever slept next to someone who gnashed his/her teeth during sleep? Or basically being around someone who does it during the day? I know you’ll agree with me it’s annoying. Well, if you do this or know someone who does, it’s not a mere habit but actually a medical condition. It’s also known as bruxism. It affects the condition of natural enamel and this allows bacteria to enter in the deep dental layers. Regular checks with the dentist are recommended even though the best way is to know how to deal with its causes.

Anger or any other suppressed feelings, anxiety, lack of relaxation before going to bed, stress, hyperactive personality e.t.c are some of the physiological factors that cause teeth grinding. Improper alignment of upper and lower teeth also contributes to this. However, pursuant to experts’ school of thoughts, its affection is not wholly explained.

So, how can you tell if you’re suffering from teeth grinding? Well, the obvious one is when your sleep partner complains about it. Others will include damaged enamel, pains in the jaw and ear areas, chipped or flattened teeth, biting or chewing your lips and so on.

Teeth grinding can be dealt with and can actually stop with simple natural ways and thus no need for drugs. In fact, listening to soothing music, long relaxing bath before going to bed, relaxation techniques such as yoga and breathing exercises and aroma therapy will do wonders. All you need is to talk to a therapist or just look over the Internet and bruxism will be a thing of the past for you.

Teeth grinding happens to most people, it is a problem only when it becomes chronic. But it is very difficult to find out if you suffer from bruxism as people usually grind their teeth in sleep. In fact most people usually come to know that they suffer from this problem from people sleeping next to them. However if you have a constant headache or sore jaws it can be a positive sign that you may be suffering from this condition. Preventing teeth grinding can be an issue as there is no guaranteed or complete cure.

Your dentist might recommend medication like injecting botulin toxin into the nerves responsible for this problem. Or you may be simply advised to wear night guards. If your teeth grinding is being caused by stress you may be referred to a psychiatrist. Aversive conditioning is also known to produce good results, simply ask people at home or roommates to wake you up when you grind teeth during sleep. You might also try negative massing techniques like tightening and relaxing your teeth alternately. If you prefer natural remedies then try using exercises for Temporomandibular Joint. Reduce or lessen the intake of alcohol, tea, coffee and all food with chocolate. Apply heat compress to your cheeks to help the gum muscles relax. During the day you can practice putting the tip of your tongue between your teeth. This can help you get rid of this habit.

Though there is no procedure which is 100% proven to be a guaranteed and permanent cure you can try any of the above procedures, some of them might be just what you need but do consult your dentist to determine exactly which procedure is suitable for you.
